接不定式和動名詞含義不同的動詞

第一條

remember(記得)，forget(忘記)，regret(后悔)后接不定式指該不定式所表示的動作還未發生，后接動名詞(有時可用完成式)，則指該動名詞所表示的動作已經發生。如：

Remember to meet me tonight. 記得晚上和我會面。

Remember to buy some stamps, won’t you? 記著買些郵票好嗎?

I remember telling you about her. 記得曾跟你談過她的事。

I remember seeing him at his office. 我記得在他的辦公室看過他。

I shall never forget seeing her for the first time. 我永遠不會忘記第一次和她見面的情景。

I forgot to ask him about it. 我忘了問他這事。

We’ve always regretted selling the farm. 賣掉這座農場我們一直后悔。

You’ll regret having said these words. 說了這些話你會感到遺憾的。

I regret to say that your grandfather has died. 我遺憾地說你祖父過世了。

I regret to tell you that your wife is i11. 我遺憾地通知你你妻子生病了。

We regret to inform you that your application hasn’t been successful. 我們遺憾地通知你你的申請不成功。

比較：

Remember to post the letter. 記住把這封信寄了。(“寄信”未發生)

I remember posting the letter. 我記得寄了那封信。(“寄信”已發生)

He forgot to pay me the money. 他忘記要給我付錢了。(“付錢”未發生)

He forgot paying me the money. 他忘記曾給我付過錢。(“付錢”發生了)

第二條

try 后接不定式表示設法做某事，接動名詞表示做某事試試(看有什么效果)。如：

They also try to fool other people. 他們也企圖欺騙別人。

We anticipated where they would try to cross. 我們預料到他們將在哪里渡河。

I shall try to insure that your stay is a pleasant one. 我將設法確保你待得很愉快。

She must be more reasonable, but by the same token you must try to understand her point of view. 她應當更講道理，但同樣地你也應設法了解她的觀點。

Try knocking at the back door if nobody hears you at the front door. 前門如沒有人答應，就敲后門試試看。

第三條

mean 后接不定式表示打算(想要)做某事，接動名詞表示意味著(要)做某事。如：

What do you mean to do with it? 你打算用它怎么樣?

He did not mean to hurt you. 他不是有意要傷害你。

Do forgive me I didn’t mean to be rude. 務請原諒，我無心對你粗魯無禮。

I mean to go there when the war is over. 我打算等戰爭結束后到那里去。

I don’t mean to praise myself；I have my faults. 我無意贊揚我自己，我有我的缺點。

This illness will mean going to hospital. 得了這種病就意味著要住院。

I won’t wait if it means delaying more than a week. 如果這意味耽誤一個多禮拜我就不等。

To raise wages means increasing purchasing power. 提高工資意味著增加購買力。
