what if 用于提出假設時，意思是“假若……”“假若……怎么辦”“要是……將會怎么樣”，其后句子可用陳述語氣（用一般現(xiàn)在時），也可用虛擬語氣（用一般過去時或should+動詞原形）。如：

What if she finds out that you’ve lost her book?  如果她發(fā)現(xiàn)你把她的書丟了怎么辦?

But what if somebody decides to break the rules? 但是如果有人決定打破這些規(guī)則呢？

What if it rains when we can’t get under shelter? 假若下起雨來，我們又沒處避雨可怎么辦?

What if I came tomorrow instead of this afternoon? 我今天下午不來，明天來，怎么樣?

What if we stayed at home for a change? 我們改變一下做法，這次呆在家里。怎么樣?

What if I should fall sick and not be able to work? 萬一我生病不能工作的話怎么辦？

從句用虛擬語氣時，若是針對過去情況，從句則用過去完成時。如：

What if no one had been there? 假如沒有人去過那里的話，會怎么樣?

二、表示邀請或建議

What if…表示邀請或建議時，意思是“如果……怎么樣？”“如果……如何？”。如：

What if you join us for lunch? 同我們一起吃午飯怎么樣？

What if we moved the sofa over here? Would that look better? 要是我們把沙發(fā)挪到這邊來會怎么樣？看上去會不會好一些？

三、表示不重要

此時通常常與so連用，意為“就算……那又怎樣？”如：

So what if we’re a little late? 就算我們遲到一會兒那又怎樣？

So what if the colours clashed? 就算顏色不協(xié)調那又怎樣？

So what if he was late. Who cares? 他就是遲到了那又怎樣。誰在乎？

So what if nobody else agrees with me? 就算沒有一個人贊成我的意見，那又怎么樣？

注：若句意清楚，so what if…有時可省略成so what? 如：

A：I’m afraid it’s too expensive. 恐怕太貴了。

B：So what? We’ve plenty of money. 那有什么關系? 我們有的是錢。

A：Someone will see you doing it. 會有人看見做這事的。

B：So what? 看見又怎樣?
