■ more and more

1. 表示“越來越多的”，用于修飾名詞。如：

More and more people began to move to the city. 越來越多的人向城市搬遷。

More and more money was spent on it. 在這上面花的錢越來越多。

2. 表示“越來越……”，用于修飾形容詞、副詞、動詞、介詞短語等。如：

It’s becoming more and more difficult to find a job. 找工作越來越困難了。

We’re going more and more slowly. 我們越走越慢了。

I worry more and more every day. 我一天比一天更加擔(dān)心。

She’s growing to be more and more like her mother. 她長得越來越像她媽。

注：有時用的可能是普通的比較級形式。如：

The weather is getting colder and colder. 天氣越來越冷了。

Debbie is growing fast. She’s getting taller and taller. 戴比長得很快，她個子越來越高。

■ more or less

1. 表示“或多或少”“在一定程度上”“大體上”。如：

The job’s more or less finished. 這項工作差不多完成了。

I’ve more or less finished reading the book. 我差不多已經(jīng)把這本書看完了。

2. 表示“大約”“左右”。如：

The repairs will cost $50, more or less. 修理費(fèi)大約要50美元。

It took more or less a whole day to paint the ceiling. 粉刷天花板用了將近一整天的時間

3. 表示“一點(diǎn)也不”，用于否定句。如：

I don’t like it, more or less. 我一點(diǎn)也不喜歡。

I didn’t understand it, more or less. 我一點(diǎn)也不懂。

■ more than

1. 表示“多于”，通常后接數(shù)詞。如：

I’ve known him for more than twenty years. 我已認(rèn)識他 20多年了。

There were not more than a hundred people at the rally. 大概不到100人參加了集會。

2. 表示“不只是”“不僅僅是”，通常后接名詞、動詞、從句等。如：

He is more than a brother to me. 他待我勝過兄長。

His report is more than a survey. 他的報告不只是一份調(diào)查。

The result was much more than I imagined. 結(jié)果遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)超過我的想象。

3. 表示“極其”“非常”，通常后接形容詞、副詞或分詞等。如：

She was more than kind to us. 她對我們很友好。

I’m more than happy to take you there in my car. 我非常愿意用汽車把你送去。

4. 表示“難以”“完全不能”，其后通常連用情態(tài)動詞 can。如：

That is more than I can tell (=I can’t tell that). 那事我實(shí)在不明白。

■ no more

1. 表示“也不”。如：

A：I cannot understand this at all. 我根本不懂這個。

B: No more can I. 我也不懂。

2. 表示“不能再多”“沒有更多的”，表示數(shù)或程度。如：

I can eat no more. 我不能再吃了。

I have no more to say. 我再沒有什么要說的了。

3. 表示“不再”表示時間。如：

I’ll go there no more. 我將再也不去那里了。

■ no more than

主要用于強(qiáng)調(diào)數(shù)量之少或程度之低，其意為“僅僅”“只有”“只不過”。如：

I have no more than five yuan in my pocket. 我口袋里的錢只不過五元。

This test takes no more than thirty minutes. 這個測驗需時不超過30分鐘。

The pub was no more than half full. 該酒吧的上座率最多不超過五成。

注：有時比較級不是more，而是其他形式的比較級。一般說來，no+比較級+than=as +與比較級意義相反的形容詞的原形+as。如：

Her French was no better than mine. 她的法語跟我一樣不好。

Their house is no bigger than ours. 他們的房子跟我們的一樣不大。

She looks no older than her daughter. 她看起來跟她女兒一樣不老。

■ no more...than

用于兩者比較，并且否定兩者，其意為“不……也不”“同……一樣不”。如：

She’s no more a great singer than I am. 我不是優(yōu)秀歌手，她也不是。

Tom is no more rich than Jack is. 杰克不是有錢人，湯姆也不是。

I know no more Spanish than I know Greek. 我對西班牙語和希臘語同樣都不懂。

He is no more an artist than you are a mathematician. 就像你不是數(shù)學(xué)家一樣，他也不是藝術(shù)家。

■ what’s more

用于引出更重要的信息，其意為“更重要的”“更有甚者”“而且”。如：

He’s dirty, and what’s more he smells. 他很臟，身上還有味兒呢。

They are going to get married, and what’s more they are setting up in business together. 他們就要結(jié)婚了，而且還要一起做生意呢。

She says we could use her car, and what’s more, she’ll pay for the petrol. 她說我們可以用她的車，而且她還愿付汽油費(fèi)。
