He stopped speaking, and there was not a sound in the room.

He stopped to listen, but there was no more sound.

      (5) can’t help

He couldn’t help crying when he heard the news.

The medicine can’t help to get rid of your cold.

You oughtn’t to go on living this way.

Go on to do the other exercises after you have finished this one.

My coat needs mending [to be cleaned].

Your coat wants brushing [to be brushed].

His coming late made the teacher angry.

Would you mind my opening the door?

Please excuse my interrupting you.

We’re all looking forward to your [you] coming.

Can you imagine Peter [Peter’s] saying such a thing?

Mary’s going there is of no help.

It’s a waste of time your talking to him.

It’s doesn’t make much difference my being there.

I look forward to it getting warmer in spring.
