您的理解是對的，Mr. Smith can buy a small present before invited to a party.這個句子有錯誤，因為before后不能直接跟過去分詞，應改為Mr. Smith can buy a small present before being invited to a party. 關于這一問題，《朗文英語語法》明確指出：在after, before, since等之后不能直接跟過去分詞，而需用“being+過去分詞”。如以下各列均摘自詞典：
