would rather類虛擬語氣

would rather的意思是“寧愿”“希望”——既然是“希望”，就說明那還不是事實，所以當后接句子的時候，句子的謂語通常要用虛擬語氣，其用法及結構形式如下：

1. would rather表示希望

若從句內容是涉及的是對現在或將來情況的希望，則從句謂語用一般過去時。如：

I’d rather you went home now. 我希望你現在就回家。

Tomorrow’s difficult. I’d rather yon came next weekend. 明天有困難，我希望你下周末來。

2. would rather表示遺憾

若從句內容是涉及的是對過去已發生情況表示遺憾或后悔，則從句謂語用過去完成時。如：

I’d rather he hadn’t told me about it. 我寧愿他沒告訴我這事。

I’d rather I had gone to the theatre last night. 我倒希望我昨晚我去了劇院看戲。

若語境明確，有時從句的謂語有時可以省略與前面相同的部分。如：

You always go without me and l’d rather you didn’t. 你總是不帶我去，我可不愿意你這樣。

Katie went by car and I’d rather she hadn’t. 凱蒂是坐汽車去的，我寧愿地不坐汽車去。

第一句中的didn’t可視為didn’t go without me的省略，第二句中的hadn’t可視為hadn’t gone by car的省略。
