what you call的語法作用和意義

在必修二第2單元有這樣一句話：I lived in what you call “Ancient Greece.” 意思是：我生活在你們所說的“古希臘”。從句子意思看，what不像是疑問，不能譯成“什么東西”。那么，what究竟是什么意思呢？

我們首先看一下what在句中的作用：

充當(dāng)疑問代詞，引導(dǎo)特殊疑問句：What are you going to talk about?

充當(dāng)連接代詞，引導(dǎo)名詞性從句：I don’t know what you are going to talk about.

以上兩種情況，what仍然表示“什么”，含有疑問的意思。

what 除了充當(dāng)“疑問代詞”和“連接代詞”以外，還有一個(gè)非常重要的用法，就是英語語法所說的“復(fù)合關(guān)系代詞”，但是，當(dāng)它充當(dāng)“復(fù)合關(guān)系代詞”時(shí)，則沒有疑問的含義。這個(gè)句子中的what就具有這種用法。這就是所謂的“復(fù)合關(guān)系代詞”：一個(gè)what本身，充當(dāng)了先行詞和關(guān)系代詞兩個(gè)角色。

請(qǐng)看下面兩個(gè)句子：

(1) We must do what the teacher tells us to do. 我們必須做老師叫我們做的事情。

(2) He isn't what he was ten years ago.他現(xiàn)在不是十年前的那個(gè)他了。

句 (1) 中的what 實(shí)際上就等于everything that，表示“物”；句 (2) 中的what實(shí)際上就等于 the person that，表示“人”。這就是what 的復(fù)合關(guān)系代詞用法，它既充當(dāng)了先行詞，又充當(dāng)了關(guān)系代詞；既可以表示“物”，也可以表示“人”。what引導(dǎo)的這個(gè)句子是名詞性從句，因?yàn)樗�起的作用就相�?dāng)于一個(gè)名詞。又如：

在必修三第3單元中也有這樣一個(gè)句子：… his eyes stare at what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table.他的眼睛注視著兄弟倆飯桌上的殘羹剩飯。該句中，what 實(shí)際上等于 the food that，其中，what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table. 是stare at的賓語，而what又作了賓語從句的主語。以下表達(dá)和理解一點(diǎn)問題沒有，但是，不如原句精煉：...his eyes stare at the food of the brothers' dinner that is left  on the table. 這樣改寫一下就好理解了。

在I lived in what you call “Ancient Greece.”句中，what引導(dǎo)的這個(gè)句子是名詞性從句，做in的賓語；而what又充當(dāng)了call的賓語，Ancient Greece是賓語補(bǔ)足語。

what you call還可以有被動(dòng)語態(tài)，即what is called，譯為“（你們）所說的，所謂的”。從漢語翻譯角度看，可以把what you call或what is called當(dāng)成定語來翻譯。下面列舉一些常見的句子，仔細(xì)體味其中的涵義：

He is what you call a “walking dictionary”. 他就是你所謂的“活字典”。

It depends on what you call normal. 這要看你覺得什么是正常。

That's what you call a cultural difference. 那就是你所謂文化上的不同。

What you call emotion or feeling is the connective between us. 你們所謂的感覺和情感正是聯(lián)系我們的紐帶。

The old man lived in what was called a small forest. 那位老人住在所謂的一座樹林中。

Is that a result of what you call educating the people? 那是不是你所謂教育人民的結(jié)果?

Is this what you call counting your chicken before they hatch? 這就是所謂蛋未孵出先數(shù)雞(打如意算盤)嗎?

I am wiser than to believe what you call money talks. 我不至于愚蠢到相信你所謂的金錢萬能的說法。

In order to live, I must have what you call “the needful”, which I can got only by working. 為了生活, 我必需要你所謂的 “錢”, 而我只有工作才能掙錢。
