■in answer to作為對……的回答；響應……的請求

■in contrast to與……相反（完全不同）；與……相比，與……形成對比

■in opposition to 與……相反（相對）

I should choose this in preference to any other. 我寧愿選擇這個而不要其他的。

■in proportion to 相對……來說；與……成比例

The room is wide in proportion to its height. 這房間就其高度的比例而言是很寬的。

The tax increases in proportion to the amount you earn. 所得稅隨著你的收入額按比例增加。

■in reference to 關于，有關

I am writing in reference to your job application. 敬復者，關于您申請工作一事。

He spoke in reference to the new plan. 他就有關新計劃的問題發表了談話。

【注】其中的in也可換成with。如：

■in relation to 關于；涉及；與……相比

Many questions were asked, particularly in relation to the cost of the new buildings. 大家提出的問題很多，尤其是涉及新大廈成本的。

【注】有時也說with relation to。如：
