一、rather與quite同不定冠詞連用

當不定冠詞與 rather, quite 搭配使用時，不定冠詞通常應置于其后。如：

He is rather a fool. 他是個大傻瓜。

It was quite a job to persuade him. 我費了九牛二虎之力才勸服了他。

但是，若該結構中的名詞帶有形容詞修飾語，則不定冠詞可放在這些詞語之前或之后。如：

It was rather a busy day. = It was a rather busy day. 那天相當忙。

It is quite an interesting film [a quite interesting] film. 這是一部相當有趣的電影。

二、rather與quite同定冠詞連用

當定冠詞與 rather, quite 搭配使用時，定冠詞通常應置于其后。這樣用的 rather 和 quite 主要用于加強語氣，其意為“完全”“正是”等。如：

He’s going quite the wrong way. 他路全走錯了。

That was quite the nicest meal I’ve ever had. 那可真是我吃過的最好的一頓飯。

That’s rather the impression I wanted to give. 那正是我要給人們留下的印象。

但是，若 rather 或 quite 需要直接修飾名詞前的形容詞，則也可能置于定冠詞之后，此時的 rather 或 quite 表示“相當”。如：

the rather slippery subject of race relations 相當棘手的種族關系問題
