what 的特殊用法

網(wǎng)友問：有這樣一個句子：Today they are accepted as the beginning of what we call “modern art”. What在句中是什么意思？作何種成分？　　

本句中，they 指代the Impressionist paintings。意思是：今天，印象派作品被公認為我們所說的“現(xiàn)代藝術”的開端。　　

人教版新課標英語課本中，類似的句子曾出現(xiàn)過多次。例如：　　

I lived in what you call “Ancient Greece”. 我生活在你們所說的“古希臘”。　　

以上兩句中，what we call和what you call用為一個句式，意為“我們所說的（所謂的）”和“你們所說的（所謂的）”。從教學和翻譯角度，我們可以把what we/you call按定語看待，分別修飾 modern art 和 Ancient Greece。但是，實際上 what we call “modern art”  和what you call “Ancient Greece” 都是名詞性從句：第一句 modern art 是call 的賓語，what是 modern art 的賓補。第二句 Ancient Greece 是 call 的賓語，what是 Ancient Greece 的賓補。問題是，what 在這里該怎么理解？能不能翻譯成帶有疑問的“什么”？回答顯然是不行的。再看一個句子：　　

His eyes stare at what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table.（他的眼睛注視著兄弟倆飯桌上的殘羹剩飯）。這是美國著名作家馬克·吐溫名作The Million Pound Bank Note上的一個句子。說的是一個窮困潦倒的美國青年，在英國富人家里看到的情況。從句子意思看，what不像是疑問，不能譯成“什么東西”。那么，這些what 究竟是什么意思呢？　　

what的主要作用有3個（當然還有其他用法，如引導感嘆句）：　　

1. 充當疑問代詞，引導特殊疑問句。　　

What are they talking about over there?　　

2. 充當連接代詞，引導名詞性從句（如賓語從句），仍然表示“疑問”概念。　　

I don’t know what they are talking about over there.　　

3. 充當“復合關系代詞”，引導名詞性從句（如賓語從句），不表示“疑問”概念。　　

“復合關系代詞”，是what的一個非常重要的用法，以上三個句子中的what就是此種用法。下面再看兩個句子：　　

(1) We should do what the teacher tells us to do. 我們應該做老師叫我們做的事情。　　　　

(2) He isn't what he was ten years ago.他現(xiàn)在不是十年前的那個他了�！　�　　

句 (1) 中的what 實際上就等于everything that，the things that或the thing that，表示“物”的概念；句 (2) 中的what實際上就等于 the person that，表示“人”的概念。這兩句話解釋了what復合關系代詞的用法：它既充當了先行詞，又充當了關系代詞；既可以表示“物”，也可以表示“人”。　　　　

從語法作用看，what引導的這個句子叫做名詞性從句，因為它起的作用就相當于一個名詞。那么，what從句在主句中做什么成分呢？請看例句：　　　　

What we need is their help. （做主語）我們所需要的就是他們的幫助。　　　　

He has got what he wants. （做賓語）他得到了他想要的（東西）。　　　　

That is what I heard on the bus.（做表語）那就是我在公共車上聽到的（故事）�！　�　　

what 本身在它引導的從句中做什么成分呢？請看例句：　　　　

What appears difficult may be very easy. （做主語）看起來很難的事情也許很容易。　　　　

What we liked most was his jokes.（做賓語）我們最喜歡的（東西）就是他講的笑話�！　�　　

China is not what she was more than 50 years ago.（做表語）中國已不是50多年前的中國了。　　　　

在 His eyes stare at what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table. 中，what 相當于 the food that, what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table 整個句子是 stare at 的賓語從句，而what又作了賓語從句的主語，of the brothers' dinner 做 what 的定語�！�
