用作連詞、副詞、形容詞的otherwise

1. 用作連詞，意為“否則”“要不然”，其后的句子根據情況可用陳述語氣或虛擬語氣。如：

Take a taxi, otherwise you’ll miss your train.你如不叫出租汽車，你就會誤掉火車的。

He worked very hard, otherwise he would have failed. 當初他學習非常刻苦，要不然他就會不及格了。

在口語中，用作連詞的otherwise通常用or代替。

2. 用作副詞，主要用法有：

(1) 表示“除此以外”“從其他方面來講”。如：

The boy is noisy, but otherwise a nice boy. 這男孩愛吵鬧，但其他方面倒還不錯。

The driver suffered shock but was otherwise unhurt. 司機除了受到驚嚇外并未受傷。

(2) 表示“不同地”“采取別的方式”。如：

You could hardly think otherwise. 你很難不這樣想。

I think it will rain this afternoon, but he thinks otherwise. 我認為今天下午會下雨，但他卻不這樣想。

(3) 用于習語or otherwise，表示“或相反”“或其反面”。如：

There will be no surprise—pleasant or otherwise. 不會有什么意想不到的事，不論是令人愉快的還是令人不愉快的。

3. 用作形容詞，主要表示“不是那樣的”“另外的”。如：

The truth is quite otherwise. 實情大有出入。

Some are wise and some are otherwise. 有些人聰明，另一些則不然。
