free的用法與搭配

1. 表示自由做某事，其后接不定式。如：

He is free to do what he likes to do. 他可以為所欲為。

You are free to go anywhere you wish. 你愿意去哪兒就可以去哪兒。

2. 用于for free，其意為“免費”“不花錢”，主要用作狀語。如：

My neighbour cut my hair for free. 我的鄰居免費給我理發。

I got this ticket for free from somebody who didn’t want it. 我這張票沒花錢，是別人不要的。

若用作表語，直接用free即可。如：

Admission to the concert is free. 音樂會是免費入場的。

另外，若用于名詞前定語，表示“免費”，也直接用free。如：

We enjoy free medical care. 我們享受免費醫療。

3. 表示“免除……”“無……的”，可以用be free of和be free from，相比之下，后者指免除或擺脫，多用來指一些不好的東西：

(1) be free of charge (cost, expense) 免費 / be free of debts沒有債務 / be free of rent 免收租金 / be free of the station 不在（離開）車站

(2) be free from pain (disease, fear, danger, error) 沒有痛苦（疾病，恐懼，危險，錯誤）

但是，有時兩者可換用。如：

The city is free of [from] thieves. 這個城市沒有盜賊。

4. 用作副詞時，注意它與freely的區別：free用作副詞時用法非常有限，在現代英語中只表示“免費地”“無償地”，而副詞freely的意思則比較多，如表示“自由地”“通暢地”“主動地”等，但是它不表示“免費地”。如：

Children can get into the museum free. 兒童可以免費進入博物館參觀。

Now that we are alone, we can speak freely. 現在我們單獨在一起，可以隨便談了。

Water flowed freely from the pipe. 水從管道里通暢地流了出來。
