mankind的語法與用法

1. 基本用法

mankind的意思是“人類”，它是一個不可數的集合名詞，不用復數形式，也不連用冠詞。如：

the worst war in the history of mankind 人類歷史上最糟糕的戰爭

Language is peculiar to mankind. 語言是人類特有的。

Sympathy is the feeling characteristic of mankind. 同情心是人類特有的情感。

The civilization of mankind has taken thousands of years. 人類經數千年才文明開化。

We labour for the happiness of mankind. 我們為人類的幸福而工作。

2. 使用代詞

mankind 后通常用 it, its 之類的代詞，而不用 he, his 等。如：

Mankind has its own problems. 人類有自己的問題。

比較：若用 man 表示“人類”，則用 he, his 等代詞。如：

Man has his problems.

3. 特別提醒

前面說過，mankind 表示“人類”是一個表集合意義的不可數名詞，因此不能有復數形式。但有趣的是，它有時可視為復數，尤其是其表語是復數時。如：

Mankind are intelligent animals. 人是理智的動物。

另外，在現代英語中，有的人認為用 mankind 來表示“人類”，是對女性的歧視，建議用humans, human beings, the human race 等代之。
