強調句的感嘆句式

當It is (was)之后的部分是被強調的主語或賓語時，可以用What或How開頭，構成感嘆句式。

What a beautiful painting it was that Mary showed us!　　

What remarkable intelligence it was that you have displayed!

How wonderful an idea it is that he has got!

How funny a story it was that made us laugh!

強調句的否定句式

有些否定句在變成強調句時，要把否定轉移到被強調的詞語之前。例如部分否定句，在變為強調句時，要把not提到It is (was)之后。尤其是“not… until…”句式的強調要特別注意，應將not置于被強調部分里面。例如：

請比較以下兩組，強調的角度不同。

A. It wasn’t I that made fun of him.不是我（而是別人）取笑他。

B. It was I that didn’t make fun of him. 就是我沒有取笑他。

A. It wasn’t Mary that looked down upon you. 不是瑪麗（而是別人）瞧不起你。

B. It was Mary that didn’t look down upon you. 就是瑪麗沒有瞧不起你。

All of the boys in our class don’t like football.

→It isn’t all of the boys in our class that (who) like football.

Both sisters are not interested in physics.

→It isn’t both sisters that (who) are interested in physics.

Everybody doesn’t know the answer.

→It isn’t everybody that knows the answer.

All that glitters is not gold.

→It isn’t all that glitters that is gold.

Money can’t buy everything.

→It is not everything that money can buy.

He didn’t realize his mistake until the teacher had told him.

→It wasn’t until the teacher had told him that he realized his mistake.

注意：在強調句式中雖然not被提前，但主句不要到裝。不可說：*It wasn’t until the teacher had told him did he realize his mistake.

（四）強調句的幾個注意問題

你的這個問題是涉及強調句式“用It is還是用It was”的問題。這與not...until...句型沒有直接的聯系。

我們可以根據原句時態，來確定用It is還是用It was。如果原句時態屬于現在時間范疇（包括一般現在時，現在進行式，現在完成時，一般將來時等），則用It is …；如果原句時態屬于過去時間范疇（包括一般過去時，過去進行時，過去完成時，過去將來時等），則用It was … 例如：

It is at ten o’clock that the meeting will take place.

What is it that you want me to do now?

It was not until yesterday that I heard the news.

Was it John that broke the window this morning?
