“所有國家”還是“全國人民”

■該書在5.18.3節(見181頁)有這樣一組例句和翻譯：

All the country was against it. 所有國家都反對它。

Half the country was against it. 半數國家反對它。

All of the country was against it. 所有的國家都反對它。

Half of the country was against it. 有半數國家反對它。

■我們認為將all the country譯為“所有國家”欠妥，因為句中的country是單數，不是復數；若是all the countries，那才是“所有國家”的意思。

■句中all the country的意思應是“全國人民”，all of the country也是“全國人民”的意思。

■同樣的道理，half the country不是“半數國家”，而應是“全國有一半的人”，half of the country也是“全國有一半的人”。

■類似地，all the family的意思是“全家人”，不是“所有的家庭”。以下各例句摘自《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》

All the family are flourishing. 全家人身體都很好。
