regret后接不定式與接動名詞

■regret to do sth 的意思是：對將要發生的事感到“遺憾”或“抱歉”。如：

I regret to tell you that he can’t come. 很抱歉他不能來。

I regret to say that you have failed your exam. 我很遺憾地告訴你，你考試不及格。

We regret to say that we are unable to help you. 很遺憾，我們不能幫助你。

We regret to say that we can’t accept your kind offer. 很抱歉我們不能接受你的友好提供。

We regret to inform you that your account is over drawn. 我們遺憾地通知你，你的賬戶已經透支了。

We regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you the job. 我們遺憾地通知你，我們沒法給你這份工作。

We regret to inform passengers that the l4.50 train for Cardiff will leave approximately 37 minutes late. 我們遺憾地通知各位旅客，14點50分開往加的夫的火車大約晚開37分鐘。

注：其后所接不定式通常是 to say,  to tell, to inform 等，此時主語一般是第一人稱，且 regret 通常只限于現在時。

■regret doing sth 的意思是：對已經發生的事感到“后悔”或“遺憾”。如：

I regret spending so much money. 我很后悔花了這么多錢。

I regret missing the film. 我懊悔沒有看上那部電影。

I regret being unable to help. 我感到抱歉，不能幫助你。

I regret leaving the firm after twenty years. 我為經過20年后離開那家公司感到遺憾。

He said he so much regretted not being able to swim. 他說他對不會游泳感到非常遺憾。

I regret leaving school at 14一it was a big mistake. 我后悔14歲就輟學——這是個大錯。

◎表示對已經發生的事感到“后悔”或“遺憾”，除后接動名詞的一般式外，有時也接動名詞的完成式。如：

He regretted doing [having done] it. 他后悔做了此事。

She regrets having said it. 她后悔說了這話。

Not a day passes when I don’t regret not having studied music in my youth. 投有一天我不后悔年輕的時候沒有學音樂。

◎偶爾還可接不定式的完成式。如：

I regret not having [to have] worked harder. 我后悔當初沒有更努力些。

◎若句中含有具體的過去時間狀語，則以用動名詞的一般式表示已發生的動作。如：

I regret going there yesterday. 我后悔昨天去了那兒。
