■admit v. 1. She admitted having seen us. I admit breaking the window. 如: He admitted (to) stealing. He admitted (to) feeling a bit tired. She admitted him to be right. You must admit the task to be difficult. He admitted that it was really his fault. She admitted that she was afraid of spiders. This ticket admits one person only. There were no windows to admit air. The school admits 200 students every year. She was admitted to [into] the Party. She was admitted as a Party member. He opened the door and admitted me to enter into the house.(可將to enter去掉) 3. The price quoted will not admit of any allowance. This sentence admits of several interpretations. ■advance n.&v. 1. The army’s advance was very slow. China has made great advances in industry. China has made great advances in industry. Under this system popular education has made persistent advance. We need more money if we are to make any further advances in this area of science. (3) in advance(事先,提前)和in advance of(在…… 如: The rent must be paid in advance. He is far in advance of his class. in advance of有時可用于指時間“比……早”。如: She arrived in advance of everyone else. They gave me an advance of a month’s pay. She asked for an advance on her salary. He was paid $2,000 as an advance on royalties. The bank gave [made] her an advance of $500. They offered an advance of £5,000 after the signing of the contract. |
