陷阱4  誤解police的意思

people表示“警察”的總稱，含有“警方”“警察當局”之意，其前通常用the（有時也可省略），形式上是單數，但含義上為復數；用作主語時，謂語要用復數。如：

The police believe him to be dangerous. 警方認為他是個危險人物。

表示“一個警察”時不能用它，即不能說a [one] police，而應根據情況用a policeman / a policewoman；但表示多個警察時，可用它。如：

There were over 100 police on duty. 有超過百名警察值班。

錯點5  混淆hair與hairs

hair表示“頭發”的總稱，是集合名詞，不可數。如：

Most people have lots of hair on their heads. 多數人頭上都有很多頭發。

但若表示一根頭發，是個體名詞，可數。如：

Look at this, a hair in my soup. 你瞧，我的湯里有根頭發。

比較：

He has grey hair. 他滿頭白發。

He has grey hairs. 他有些白發了。

陷阱6  將fun誤用作可數名詞

fun表示“有趣的事”“娛樂”“玩笑”等，永遠不可數，既不能連用不定冠詞，也不能用復數形式。如：

揚帆駕舟十分有趣。

誤：It’s a great fun to sail a boat.

陷阱7  誤解tear與newspaper的可數性

tear和newspaper的可數性很容易弄錯。有的同學想當然地認為“眼淚”即“淚水”，“水”不可數，“淚水”和“眼淚”也應該不可數。但事實上，tear(眼淚)卻是一個可數名詞。如：

A tear rolled down his cheek. 一滴淚珠沿著他的面頰流下來。

To their surprise, she burst into tears. 使他們驚訝的是她哭了起來。

同樣地，有的人可能認為，news (消息)和 paper(紙)均為不可數名詞，所以newspaper(報紙)也應是不可數名詞。但事實上，newspaper(報紙)也是一個可數名詞。如：

Will you get me a newspaper when you’re out? 你出去順便給我捎一張報紙來，好嗎?

The duties of a postman are to deliver letters and newspapers. 郵遞員的任務就是投遞信與報紙。
