4.3.3 關系代詞that 與關系副詞when的區別 關系副詞when引導關系從句通常放在表示時間的名詞如 time, period, moment, day, summer, morning等之后。例如: Do you remember the time when we all went to a night club? I’ll never forget the day when I first met you. (相當于I’ll never forget the day on which I first met you.) 實際上,關系代詞that可以替代關系副詞when 引導關系從句。比如John Eastwood在 Oxford Guide to English Grammar (Seventh impression 2002) p365指出: a. We can leave out when, or we can use that instead. Do you remember the time (that) we all went to a night club? b. We can use when without a noun. Do you remember when we all went to a night club? 但是,不可以改為:﹡Do you remember that we all went to a night club? 另外,Michael Swan在Practical English Usage (Third Edition 2005)p483指出: After common nouns referring to time, when is often replaced by that or dropped in an informal style. Come and see us any time (that) you’re in town. I’ll never forget the day (that) we met. That was the year (that) I first went abroad. That was the time he arrived. That was the time when he arrived. That was the time at which he arrived. That was the time that he arrived (at). (潘歡懷《現代英語實用句法》(北京師范大學出版社 1984年9月第1版)p463) 還有,薄冰編著的《高級英語語法》最新修訂)(世界知識出版社 2002年10 月第8次印刷) p535指出:下面一些說法都對,但①最為正式,⑦最為非正式: ① The day on which she arrived was Thursday. ② The day which she arrived on was Thursday. ③ The day that she arrived on was Thursday. ④ The day she arrived on was Thursday. ⑤ The day when she arrived was Thursday. ⑥ The day that she arrived was Thursday. ⑦ When she arrived was Thursday.
