四、表示其他事物的名詞作主語。這類無生命主語句的翻譯，可以照字面直譯。例如：

The matter asks immediate attention. 這件事需要立即予以注意。

Her heart did whisper that he had done it for her. 她心里的確在嘀咕，他這么做是為了她。

The door refuses to close. 門關(guān)不上。

The heat makes me sweat like a pig. 我熱得滿頭大汗。

His deeds moved me to tears. 他的事跡使我感動(dòng)得流下眼淚。

His illness left him weak. 疾病使他虛弱。

The conference threw doubt upon the new policy. 會(huì)議使人們對(duì)新政策產(chǎn)生懷疑。

My watch says five.我的表顯示5點(diǎn)。

His passion carried him astray.他的熱情讓他誤入歧途。

Death walks closer to the patient. 死亡向病人靠近。

Love embraces me from time to time. 愛情時(shí)常擁抱我。

The minutes slipped by quickly.時(shí)間一分一分地溜走了。

五、it作形式主語或用there做引導(dǎo)詞，句子真正的主語是后面的詞或從句。翻譯這類英語句子時(shí)，可將后面的真正主語補(bǔ)充出來，或者加上“有人”、“人們”、“大家”等。例如：

It was very wise of her to bring an umbrella. 她帶了雨傘，真是明智。

It is expected that our team will win the game. 我們代表隊(duì)有望贏取比賽。（也可譯為：人們期待我們的代表隊(duì)贏取比賽。）

It is generally felt that his appointment was a serious mistake. 現(xiàn)在，大家都覺得當(dāng)時(shí)對(duì)他的任命是個(gè)嚴(yán)重的失誤。

Right now it strikes me that it is a mission by no means easy to complete. 此時(shí)此刻我突然間想到這是個(gè)絕非容易完成的任務(wù)。

There is a growing concern over the population growth. 人們對(duì)人口的迅速增長(zhǎng)越來越關(guān)注。

There comes a knock at the door. 有人敲門。

In ordinary living, there can be some tolerance of unpunctuality.在日常生活中，我們要容忍一些不守時(shí)的情況。

There was expected strong disagreement on the matter.在這個(gè)問題上人們估計(jì)有很大分歧。

1. The thought of spending another year makes me physically sick. 想到再花一年的時(shí)間，我就反感。

2. A clear conscience laughs at false accusations. 只要問心無愧，別人的指責(zé)可以一笑置之。

3. Winter finds out what summer lays by. 到了冬天才知道夏天儲(chǔ)存東西的重要。
